Choose an issue: Affirmative Action - Candidate Comparison Barack Obama - "I want to make sure that today’s decision upholding affirmative action remains in force, and that the doors of opportunity remain open to all those who make up our nation.”Barack Obama - “This administration sought to slam the doors of higher education in the face of African Americans and other minorities. It’s a sad day for the cause of equal opportunity when the President of the United States, the land of opportunity, calls for the Supreme Court to rule against policies that seek to open institutions for historically excluded racial minorities,” Blair Hull - Urges Support of Affirmative Action and Policies that will Protect and Strengthen Civil Rights Laws. . .Through their actions, the Bush Administration has clearly defined its agenda as one of divisiveness. From expressing support for the weakening of affirmative action programs to judicial nominees who are outspoken opponents of women’s rights. Estella Johnson-Hunt - In favor of Jack Ryan - Not when it's based on race, but I'm for it if it's based on socio-economic status.. John H. Cox - I'm in favor of affirmative action. But only when based on economic need, not on race. Nancy Skinner - Even a conservative Supreme Court got this one right. The military brass said it was essential to having an effective fighting force, business leaders weighed in and said it is crucial for competitiveness in today's global economy. I went to the University of Michigan and experienced that diversity. I believe it personally helped me in a way that my otherwise all white hometown was unable to. And the next step to eliminating the need for affirmative action must be taken as Justice O'Connor said. I believe that means ensuring the same excellent opportunities in K-12 for all Americans, so that college admissions is truly based on equal opportunity. |
