Notes His father, Thomas Hynes, is a former Illinois Senate president and Cook County assessor who remains influential as a member of the Democratic National Committee and the committeeman for one of Chicago's vote-rich ward.

The co-chairmen of his campaign include Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley, County Board President John H. Stroger, Mellody Hobson of Ariel Capital Management, Illinois Senate Majority Leader Vince Demuzio of Carlinville and Laborers' union official Ed Smith of Cairo.

The Hynes family has a track record of winning statewide elections. He managed President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election in the state.

Hynes spokeswoman Chris Mather argues that Hynes will do well Downstate because he has run statewide twice, locked in the support of more than 70 Democratic county chairmen and fought for issues important around the state as comptroller.

Loop lawyer Matthew Hynes, a brother, was Al Gore's Illinois campaign manager in 2000.

Hynes was a health care attorney for a Chicago law firm
