Democratic Roundup - Illinois Senate Race
Key: Sen. Jon Corzine, the 56-year-old former bond trader grew up in the small town of Willeys Station near Taylorville and attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. In 2000, he won a Senate seat in his adopted state of New Jersey after spending $62 million of his own money. He is the national Democratic figure charged with helping his party retake the U.S. Senate, and is betting on Illinois to push him over the top. Dan Hynes is said to be in the lead position. He has raised impressive amounts of money. But still has not officially announced his candidacy, and his stance on the issues are sketchy. Barack Obama has raised good amounts of money. Is the leading African American in the race, is the only person with legislative experience, and seems to be running a good race. He was dealt a fairly major blow when Bobby Rush endorsed and went to work for Blair Hull. Obama had previously challenged Rush's seat in Congress. Blair Hull seems to be running an excellent campaign. And he should be, with a net worth of $500 million, and a pledge to spend up to $40 million in this race, no corners will be cut. He has worked vigorously to gain downstate support. John Simmons the only downstate candidate dropped out of the race early and has endorsed Hynes. Hull has a very good website, at least four consulting firms working for him, and a good staff. He has run the first ad campaigns, and blitzed the internet. Putting ads in Chicago papers including print and internet editions, placing paid listings on Google, and utilizing Meetup.com. He has no experience, no track record, and many view him as trying to "buy" the election. He started his company with shady blackjack earnings, which has turned off others. |
